Garden pond water feature

Most gardens will benefit from the addition of any type of water feature, but a garden pond water feature captures a particularly fond place in most people’s hearts. Not only is the pond a great focal point for garden design, but it’s also a place that can become a tranquil retreat from the stresses of everyday life, somewhere to enjoy the gentle water and nature sounds, and it’ll encourage more wildlife into your garden.

It's no coincidence that many meditation and relaxation guides feature different types of water sounds, as the calming nature of these is recognised as a natural source of stress relief, so creating a water feature to enhance those sounds in your garden pond can only be a good thing.

Solar power means that it needn’t be a difficult or complicated operation to install a pond water feature, with the majority of systems requiring minimal work to get them going. There are still some more complex designs that require the installation of power and plumbing, but we’ve decided to look at some pond water features that most of us can tackle installing without too much trouble.

The Hydria Water Fountain is a complete kit that allows you to make your very own LED-illuminated water feature in or out of the pond. A quick, easy and effective pond water feature with a fountain height of up to 50cm.

There’s no need to worry about power cables as it is powered by a rechargeable battery, which will give up to two months of operation on a full charge. It’s supplied with a remote control to select fountain strength and to operate the LED lights and the timer function.

Customer review: "Love the fact it's rechargeable. We tried it as a pond feature in an old tin bathtub and it worked great."

This solar fountain couldn’t be any easier to set up and create a focal point for your pond. The solar panels are attached to the fountain base, so you need to make sure your pond isn’t shaded to get the best performance. During daylight, it will operate the fountain while charging the batteries to allow a run time of about 5-6 hours during darkness.

You can allow the fountain to float around your pond or fix it in place under the surface using the suckers on the base attached to something heavy. There’s the added bonus of multi-coloured LED lights for nighttime illumination.

Customer review: "Easy to put together, effective in my small pond. Not expensive. Various fountain heads depending on what spray you want."

They provide gentle and subtle mood lighting operated by the included remote control, which allows you to choose from seven different colours and several different operating modes to help create the perfect atmosphere.

The lights are safely illuminated by a low voltage transformer powered from the mains with a 3m cable, and you can use further sets to expand your display and make your illuminations even more impressive.

  • Remote control

Cons

  • Only suitable as a mood lighting effect

Customer review: "Blends in well with the surrounding foliage and our pond fish love it."

The partially cut-away base allows contact with damp ground for cooling in the warm summer months, and the insulating ceramic will give winter protection.

As a stand-alone feature, it looks great, but you can cover it with extra vegetation in winter to provide additional cover. The added bonus is there are no batteries required!

Pros

  • Handmade
  • Looks great

Cons

  • No customer reviews

What to consider before choosing a water feature for your pond

When you set about choosing a water feature, you should make a few considerations and ensure that it complements your outdoor space and suits your preferences before making your final decision. Here are a few things to think about:

Purpose: Do you want it for soothing sounds, aesthetic appeal, or to attract wildlife?

Size and scale: Think about the size of your pond. A small pond might be overwhelmed by a large, extravagant water feature, which might be more at home in a larger pond.

Style and theme: Choose a water feature that matches the overall style of your garden. Whether it's formal, natural, contemporary, or rustic, the water feature should harmonise with the existing elements.

Maintenance and care: Consider the level of maintenance the water feature will require. Some features, like fountains, might need regular cleaning to prevent clogs and algae growth. More natural features like waterfalls may require less maintenance but still need occasional attention.

Wildlife considerations: If you're interested in attracting wildlife, such as birds or frogs, choose a water feature that provides the right environment for them. A shallow area with rocks for basking and hiding spots can be appealing to wildlife.

Types of water features: There are various types of water features to choose from:

• Waterfall: Adds movement and sound to your pond. It can be a gentle trickle or a cascading waterfall.
• Fountain: Offers a decorative and dynamic element with water jets or spouts.
• Spitter or Statuary: Involves sculptures or figures that emit water into the pond.
• Aerator: Improves pond water quality by increasing oxygen exchange.
• Stream: Creates a meandering watercourse between different parts of the pond.
