Each year brings the promise of exciting new garden trends that'll modernise your outdoor space and big predictions for how we're going to style, design, and use our gardens for the rest of the year.

We saw a deepened love and appreciation for gardens during the pandemic, and this year, industry trendsetters say that our love for all things garden will continue to grow. As we spend more time outdoors for our mental and physical wellbeing, our gardens will provide a zone that's relaxing, calming, and makes us feel good - the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We've shared the ten biggest garden trends for 2022 that provide you with plenty of new inspiration for upgrading your outdoor space and to make it your own personal haven.

Garden trends 2022

Calming pastel pink

One of the buzzwords for 2022 is 'solace', and this muted, calming collection of colours certainly turns our gardens into that as the world continues to figure out the 'new normal'.

Mixing dark leaves with green

At the last Chelsea Flower Show, there was a chic planting trend that saw dark green leaves acting as a background to lighter varieties which in turn made the green foliage seem even more lush. We're all for monopolising on the bedding space we have!

Heucheras, with their wide range of different shades from purple to black are the plants to go for.

Recycled plastics

Plastic garden furniture is rife in the UK, but it never seems to be the most stable or sustainable. And in a world where we're striving to be kinder to our planet and more eco-conscious, it just won't do.

Luckily, sustainable products are available and so we can expect to see more recycled plastic garden products this year, from tables and chairs to outdoor rugs and throws.

Fancy fruit-tree fences

Last year it was all about mini patio orchards in pots, but this year we’re going one further and growing fabulous fences and garden features with fruit trees instead. This trend ties in with the rise in searches for garden screens and dividers to create visually separate zones. According to Etsy, there was a 157 per cent increase in 2021, and we can’t think of a nicer, more natural way to do this than with a fruit-tree fence.

We’re seeing them being trained as espaliers along wires between fence or pergola posts to create screening instead.

Mini-cutting gardens

While last summer was all about squeezing fruit and veggies into our plots, 2022 is the year of the mini-cutting garden. What exactly is it? Well, all you need is a flowerbed, container, or some pots to produce a variety of different blooms to grow, admire, then cut and take indoors or give to family and friends.

Instead of buying bunches of supermarket blooms, you can find joy and comfort in growing a patch of your own pick-your-own flowers.

Faff-free fabrics

If you want to truly relax and unwind in your garden, you'll want to have soft furnishings to keep you cushioned. But faffing about with waterproof furniture covers and moving fabrics in and out of the shed unsettles the calm in your garden oasis.

Fortunately, there's a market for weatherproof fabrics growing this year so soft furnishings can be left out all year round whilst still looking as gorgeous as ever.

Keep an eye out for weatherproof fabrics such as Olefin, Textilene, Sunbrella, and Soltex.

Exterior weatherproof plug sockets will be top of garden wish lists this summer, so get yours sorted now ahead of the demand.

It must be installed by a qualified electrician, and is relatively cheap. Fixing a box to an exterior house wall will cost around £100, as long as it’s aligned with an indoor socket. To get an electric supply down to a garden building such as a shed or summerhouse, expect to pay around £500-plus.
