FAQs

What should I check before I buy a garden hammock?

Geoff Hodge, contributor to Modern Gardens Magazine, has helped us with a short buyer's guide. His main rule when buying a hammock is "the bigger it is, the more comfortable it is to lie in". With that - on with the guide...

Maximum Weight - should be checked, which we have included in our suggestions.

Material - is worth considering as some man-made fabrics are weatherproof which will come in handy. He says: "those from natural materials may not be and will need to be stored indoors when not in use to maintain their lifespan".

Where - do you hang the hammock? Geoff suggests "tall, sturdy trees, concrete washing posts, strong fence posts or similar robust structures". If not, consider a hammock stand, which keeps your hammock up and raring to go.

Spot - should be considered, also. If you've picked a lightweight model with a stand, you have the ability to move it around, "whether that’s chasing the sun or finding a more secluded, shady spot depending on your mood."

What types of hammocks are there?

According to Geoff, there are a few different types to choose from:

Classic - also known as Brazilian or Colombian hammocks, are "perfect for sleeping and napping in," says Geoff. Plus, you're supposed to be well supported with this variety as its material folds around your body. This way, you're less likely to fall out and land on your patio.

Spreaders - or American hammocks have "a block or bar at each end to evenly space out the supporting ropes," says Geoff. Unlike classic hammocks, the material remains open and you lie on top of it. Ideal for sunbathing, this hammock means you can lie straight, rather than slightly reclined.

Mexican - are a classic variety, made from "hundreds of braided wires rather than cloth" which makes them useful during extreme weather. After all, this hammock variety is more porous than others and the wind is no match for it.

Double or even family hammocks are available.
